Vientos de España
Today’s Spark Spanish blog post is about the two winds with the most significance because they affect the whole of the Iberian Peninsular. In fact, as the Spark Spanish school is situated in the seaside town of El Puerto de Santa Maria and near Cadiz, we find that the two winds you will read about below create excellent conditions for combining your Spanish course with some watersports such as windsurfing and sailing.
En España tenemos una gran cantidad de vientos diferentes a causa del accidentado relieve peninsular, como por ejemplo el viento de tramontana, ostro, lebeche, etc. Pero ahora vamos a hablar de los dos vientos que quizá sean los más importantes porque son los que más afectan a toda la Península Ibérica.
In Spain we have many different types of winds due to the variations in elevation of the land on the peninsular. Some of the different winds are: tramontane (the northern wind across the mountains), ostro (the southerly, warm and humid wind) and libeccio (the westerly, more violent wind).
Poniente.
El poniente es un viento muy frío y húmedo de componente oeste, esto quiere decir, que se origina en el oeste y se puede dar a lo largo de todo el año. Este tipo de vientos son los que llevan las borrascas atlánticas a la Península Ibérica, creando un tiempo atmosférico muy inestable en la zona occidental peninsular. Pero en la costa mediterránea es muy diferente. Allí es un aire más bien seco, a causa del efecto Fhöen el aire se calienta y suben las temperaturas, lo cual favorece la desecación del ambiente lo que acaba provocando y propagando incendios forestales, que en verano arrasan la península. Es un viento peligroso para estar en el mar. ¡Si hay viento de poniente no me metas en el agua!
The Poniente is a very cold and humid wind originating from the West and which we experience throughout the year. This is one of the types of winds brought about by the low pressure areas in the Atlantic ocean, creating a very unstable climate in the western side of the peninsular. However the situation is very different on the Mediterranean coast where the air is much drier. Due to the Fhöen affect, the air heats up and the temperatures rise leading to a drier climate which then provokes and spreads forest fires which cause devastation across the peninsular during Summer. The Poniente is a dangerous wind as it originates over the sea.
Levante.
Este viento se origina en el Mediterráneo central. Alcanza su mayor velocidad al atravesar el estrecho de Gibraltar. A la zona este del Peñón de Gibraltar lleva niebla y lluvias.
Es más común de mayo a octubre y puede alcanzar rachas de hasta 120 kilómetros por hora en el estrecho, cuando esto sucede, ni siquiera los barcos pueden salir de los puertos. El estrecho de Gibraltar tiene unas características geográficas que lo convierten en un embudo natural que se resiste al paso del viento, lo que provoca que aumente la velocidad de viento que convierte a la zona del Estrecho en un lugar peligroso para la navegación.
Debido a su situación geográfica, Tarifa es donde más fuerte soplan los vientos de levante y de poniente, siendo el sitio perfecto para hacer surf.
The Levante originates in the central Mediterranean. It reaches it’s highest speeds across the Strait of Gibraltar. To the east of the Rock of Gibraltar the Levante wind carries snow and rain.
The Levante is more common from May to October and it can reach speeds of up to 120km/hr in the Strait of Gibraltar. When this happens the ships and boats can’t even leave. The Strait of Gibraltar has particular geographical characteristics which make it a natural funnel that resists the wind. This causes the wind speeds to increase which then make the Strait a dangerous place to sail through.
Due to it’s geographical location, Tarifa is the place where the Levante and Poniente winds blow the strongest and this makes it the perfect place to go surfing!
