As part of a new series on making language learning fun with games for the foreign language classroom, this article describes how a standard grammar revision activity can be made fun with a sentence auction.

A sentence auction is a great way to review one or various grammar points just before an exam or as an end-of-unit activity and usually a lot more fun than the typical course book review.

Preparation

1. Prepare sentences for students based on a grammar point that you would like to review or that the students found particularly difficult, say for example the conditionals. I personally aim for about 10 sentences of which around 4 are correct (e.g. If we have to listen to her singing much longer, I will throw something at her), and 6 incorrect (e.g. If I won the lottery, I will buy a spaceship and set up a house on the moon). Print the 10 sentences on a sheet of paper, you’ll need 1 copy for each team.

2. If you’re happy for your students to play using fake money, bring in monopoly money or poker tokens. If you don’t feel comfortable with this idea, just use points in class.

Set up in class

1. Elicit / explain what an auction is, act out if necessary pretending your are auctioning a famous Picasso painting for example.

2. Divide the students into pairs or small groups and appoint one student as the spokesperson of the group to avoid confusion when it comes to the bidding. The spokesperson role can be rotated after each sentence.

3. Give each group a budget of 2000 Euros / Pounds / Dollars or whichever currency you prefer. (Alternatively give them 2000 points to start with if you’d rather not have the students play for money).

4. Explain the basic rules of the auction:

  • The aim of the game is to buy as many correct sentences as possible by bidding on them and avoid buying any incorrect sentences.
  • Teams can only spend the €2000 they started with, they cannot spend any more than these €2000. Once they’ve spent all of their money, they can no longer bid on any other sentences.
  • Each bid starts at €100 and can be increased by €50.
  • The sentence will be sold (“going once, going twice, SOLD to team x!”) to the highest bidding team.
  • The winner of the game will be the team with the highest number of correct sentences minus the number of incorrect sentences.

Play the game!

1. Give out a sheet with the 10 sentences for the students and give them between 5 – 10 minutes to decide which sentences they want to bid on.

2. Start playing the game, simply starting with the first sentence and asking for students to bid. I usually have each sentence on a slip of paper in big letters, in order to physically give the sentence to the students at the end of each bidding round.

3. Keep it fast paced and interactive and build up excitement.

Scoring

1. When the game has finished once all the sentences have been sold, go through the sentences one by one asking whether they are correct or incorrect. Keep track of scores on the board (1 point for each correct sentence, -1 for incorrect sentences).

2. Announce the winners of the grammar auction based on the total number of points!

Alternative rules and options

  • Give out bonus points for teams that can correct the sentences with a mistake. They only have one chance to write down the correct sentence however!
  • With higher levels, teams can all come up with one or two sentences for the auction. Obviously they can’t bid on their own sentences!
  • Students could place bids silently, meaning they all have to put in their bid silently, and the highest bid automatically wins the sentence.
  • You could give extra points to teams that haven’t spent all of their money, for example 1 point for each €100 they have left.
  • Instead of an auction, you could get the teams to place bets on the sentences. In this way more than one team can “win” a sentence. They start for example with €2000 and they play for a certain amount of money, e.g. €200. If the sentence is correct, they win this money, if it is incorrect, the money is taken out of their account. In this case you might want to set a limit on how much they can bet on each sentence.
  • An auction can also be done with vocabulary items, idioms or phrasal verbs. Instead of sentences, have 10 vocabulary items up for bidding. Each item will have 3 or 4 explanations or descriptions. Students bid for the option they think is correct.

That’s all there is to it! It’s a fun an interactive way to review grammar, and enjoyable for both the students and the teacher, so give it a go when you can!

Andalucía has many hot spots that are worth a visit, but it can be difficult to plan your itinerary if time is short. After more than 8 years (and counting) of living in this beautiful part of Spain, I have put together the 5 magical places I believe you should absolutely aim to visit during your time here.

1. Seville

This beautiful city is characterized by stunning buildings and monuments, a great atmosphere and some of the best tapas bars. The impressive cathedral with its Giralda tower (once a minaret) is one of the biggest cathedrals in the world. The inside choir, Christopher Columbus’ tomb (supposedly with his remains, although this is disputed) and a climb up the Giralda tower to appreciate the views of the city make this site well worth a visit. Opposite the cathedral is the old Alcázar, a beautifully constructed castle / palace with big gardens to spend several hours marveling at the sheer size of the place and imagining what things were like in the old times. Head further into the Barrio Santa Cruz with its narrow winding streets, where it is easy to get lost, bump into beautiful crafts shops and idyllic small squares to enjoy some real tapas. Finish off the day with a visit to the Plaza de España, a magnificent site once built for the 1929 Expo and with colourful tiles representing each province of the country.

2. Granada

This city is home to what many call “the most beautiful building in the world”: the legendary Alhambra palace. Built at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, the snow-covered mountain tops provide a romantic backdrop to the scene. A visit to the Alhambra will keep you entertained for hours, with its different splendid palaces and the Generalife, the Alhambra’s gardens. A stroll along the Albayzín, the old Islamic quarters of the city, is a great opportunity to experience the bohemian atmosphere of the city and allows for some beautiful views of the Alhambra. On your way to the cathedral and Capilla Real, the burial place of the Reyes Católicos Isabella and Fernando, stop at some of the markets or shops where an amazing selection of colourful Maroccan merchandise is for sale, and treat yourself to some unique gifts. Lastly try and book a visit to one of the Arabic baths and a massage for a relaxing end to the day!

3. El Puerto de Santa María

This beautiful town on the Costa de la Luz sees its number of inhabitants multiply every year from 90.000 in winter to 250.000 in summer for a reason: El Puerto is the perfect place to holiday with its beautiful sand beaches, its many excellent bars and restaurants, its vibrant nightlife and the friendly people. The vast majority of its tourists are Spanish, which means the city is a very authentic Spanish town, not (yet) infested by the foreign tourism market and therefore a perfect place to pick up or practice some Spanish. The old Moorish castle San Marcos, where Cristopher Columbus lived just before he set sail to the Americas from El Puerto, provides a great insight into the areas’ past. The many different bodegas (wine cellars) in the town give more information on the sherry making trade, which originated from the sherry triangle Jerez – El Puerto de Santa María – Sanlúcar. El Puerto furthermore makes a great “base” to explore other parts of the area, as it is well connected to other cities by train, bus and ferry. The beaches and the different restaurants allow for some great chill out time, maybe with a fresh fish for lunch and a glass of local wine?

4. Cádiz

The “oldest continuously inhabited European city”, located on a peninsula in the bay of Cádiz, is surrounded by sea on nearly all sides and connected to the mainland by only a small strip of land. The city was once scattered with old watchtowers and the tallest remaining one, the Torre Tavira, gives an excellent insight into the city’s history and also has a cámera oscura to project panoramic views of the city onto a big disc. Cádiz is also a lovely town to stroll around and to spend a relaxing day. It has many different beaches, with its most well-known beach, la Caleta, showing a remarkable resemblance to la Havana, the capital of Cuba. Different scenes from the James Bond film Die Another Day were therefore recorded on this beach when it was impossible to do so in Havana itself.

5. Ronda

Situated in the province of Málaga, Ronda is a spectacular town situated at the top of a 100 metre deep gorge, which separates the old from the new part of the town. It is possible to walk down to the bottom of the gorge to appreciate the beauty of the gorge itself and the impressive Puente Nuevo bridge that goes across. The Casa del Rey Moro has gardens that can be visited and gives entrance to La Mina, an old stairway leading down to the river at the bottom of the gorge. These steps allowed Ronda to keep up their water supply when under siege and also provided a secret entrance into and exit out of the city. There are furthermore many different bars and restaurants that have stunning views of the gorge or the area around Ronda.

Andalucía has many fabulous sites and cities worth a visit, but these are the ones that in my personal opinion give the best and most authentic feel of Spanish culture.

School Trip to Spain: Andalusia and El Puerto de Santa Maria

Danesfield Manor School 19th May – 23rd May 2015

School trip to Spain

Danesfield Manor School group hug

We were delighted to have Danesfield Manor School with us on their first school trip to Spain with us in El Puerto de Santa María. All students stayed in our Spark residence during their time with us, where there was lots of fun to be had in the communal areas in the evening and in between activities or excursions.

All in all it was a full programme, with visits to Sevilla, Gibraltar (and its monkeys!), Cádiz, El Puerto and the beach as well as activities such as a paella cooking lesson, cycling, kayaking, a BBQ, film night and some tapas tasting.

We at Spark had a fantastic time with the group and their supervisors, we were impressed by how well behaved and well educated they were and how motivated they were to practice their Spanish. We hope all the students got a chance to appreciate Spanish culture and history and that they had a fantastic time together.

Inge Hol – Director of Educational Programmes

School trips to Spain

Danesfield Manor School in Gibraltar

School Trip to Spain: Andalusia and El Puerto de Santa Maria

Tudor Hall School 13th April – 18th April 2015

School trip to Spain

Tudor Hall Group hug

We were excited to have Tudor Hall with us again this year for their Spanish school trip for Years 9-12 in El Puerto de Santa María. All students all stayed with local families in El Puerto, coming in every day for their Spanish lessons, to then continue with the cultural trips in the afternoons: El Puerto, Cádiz, Jerez and Sevilla as well as an afternoon on the beach and a flamenco lesson!

We had a great time with the group, we were lucky to have lovely weather and we hope all the students and their teachers got a chance to appreciate Spanish culture and history and that they got a chance to bond outside of the classroom.

Also a special thanks to Tudor Hall teacher and students for forming a massive part of our school group video which we filmed during their school trip with us.

Inge Hol – Director of Educational Programmes

School trip to Spain

Tudor Hall visit to the beach

King’s High / Warwick group hug

We were very happy to have both King’s High school and Warwick school with us for a Spanish school trip this year during the Holy week in El Puerto de Santa María. The 23 students all stayed with local families in El Puerto, coming in every morning for their Spanish lessons, to then continue with the cultural trips in the afternoons.

We had a lovely time with these two groups and we hope all the students and their three accompanying teachers got a chance to appreciate Spanish culture and history and that they got a chance to bond outside of the classroom.

Inge Hol – Director of Educational Programmes

school trip to Spain

King’s High and Warwick schools in Sevilla

School Trip to Spain: Andalusia and El Puerto de Santa Maria

Headington School Oxford, 28th March – 01st April 2015

School trip to Spain

Headington school trip hug

We were very happy to have Headington school back for a Spanish school trip this year during the Holy week) in El Puerto de Santa María. With 15 students and 3 accompanying teachers staying in the residence, they had a very busy programme with lots of activities and Spanish classes during their days here. After a very early start on the Saturday due to a very early flight, they spent the afternoon in Cádiz where they visited some sites and then went to a flamenco show in the evening. Sunday included a tour of El Puerto and a lazy afternoon on the beach. Monday and Tuesday included several Spanish lessons, a cooking lesson, a Sevillanas dance class and a visit to Sevilla, where they visited some of the very impressive sites that Sevilla has.

Inge Hol – Director of Educational Programmes

School group trip to Spain

Headington school trip to bullring in El Puerto
