Another week has gone by here at Spark and we have just goodbye to another group of students, but it’s not all sad because it’s time for our new cultural events programme!

Starting with our welcome drinks on Monday, we will be welcoming our new students to Spark with a drink on us and as usual everyone is welcome to join and enjoy. On Tuesday we have our weekly cooking class and this week ‘Plato Alpujareño’ is on the menu.

Wednesday is a busy day here we have a walk on the beach, salsa classes and conversation classes running, join all three if you want or can!

Finally on Thursday there will be a visit to the Castle for our ‘Español en Acción’ activity, which of course means Spanish only!

After a busy but enjoyable weekend, we finally did it!

During the week, Lisa had already purchased all the decoration objects and paint, so on Saturday we could start immediatly with cleaning up the walls. This was quite a lot of work, because there had been lot of blue tack stuck on the walls throughout the years. Apart from that, we also had to remove all the clip boards, paintings and posters from the walls (these were not just a few). Fortunately, Rogier and Lisa were very fast in removing blue tack, so after a while we could start painting. We then decided to divide the roles, so that our fabulous painter Kevin could paint the walls into the real Spark colour: orange.

Rogier and Lisa were busy with decorating the reception in the meantime. Lisa was brainstorming about the places for the new objects, while Rogier carried all the new decoration objects from the van to the reception. A few hours later, when we finished painting, we were done for the day and decided to come back next week to decorate the new painted walls. We will then start with the Spark Deco Weekend Stage 2.

The Spark Deco Team will then decorate the walls behind the couch and paint the arches. After that, we will give the reception the final touch by setting up some new racks for our leaflets and we will decorate it with some beautiful photos.

We will write a new Spark Deco blog post when Spark Deco Stage 2 is over!

Wow the first week was hectic, fun and exited at the same time. We started off with an introduction of spark and the Spanish classes. They told us that the classes will be completely in Spanish. That came as a big shock to me and to my fellow students. But how is that even possible, I am a complete beginner. Luckily they proved me wrong. I didn’t understand everything the teacher was saying, but I did understand most of it. By hand gestures, sounds and other explanations in Spanish you get a really fun and informative way of teaching. It is still hard work though. Especially when you participate in the work experience program. Your whole day is packed with classes, work and study. It is a good thing the Spanish people eat really late, so after the tasks are done, you can still get dinner at 11 o ‘clock.

The people in the house are really nice, same as the people who work here. They are all crazy and a lot of fun. For example, at Wednesday we had a cooking class. We made the traditional Spanish tortillas with potatoes, eggs and onions. For me, someone who doesn’t like to cook, it was really nice to cook together. After we ate the tortillas, we still had to do the dishes……Well don’t put a couple of dutch people in a kitchen with the dishes. We put on some music and to stay in the Spanish vibes we started off with a good Spanish song, conga from Gloria Estefan. Don’t ask me how we managed to finish the dishes, but during all the singing and dancing, we did.

And then it was weekend. My first day off, without having to work, study or attend classes. It was really nice to have some time to see something of the city or the beach. The weather is great in el Puerto, so going to the beach was an obvious choice. So that is where I spend most of my Saturday. Sunday I went to Cadiz. I completely fell in love with the city. From el Puerto it is half an hour by ferry. Cadiz has a lot of great restaurants, a nice botanical garden and the ocean everywhere you look. Definitely a place I will visit a lot during my stay in el Puerto.

Another month has gone by here at Spark and I can’t believe how quickly it has gone; it’s already time for our cultural activities programme for the last week in September!

Starting with our welcome drinks on Monday, we will be welcoming our new students to Spark with a drink on us and as usual everyone is welcome to join and enjoy. On Tuesday our ‘Discover Spain’ activity is all about discovering the culture as Ilse is going to leading the students in a salsa class!

On Wednesday Gloria is cooking her special Paella, this is something everyone should learn how to make in Spain (or at least watch and then eat a lot!)

And on Thursay we have a visit to the local Bodega for sherry tasting and tapas, this is one not to be missed. What also can’t be missed is the Spanish only language rule!

De week is alweer bijna voorbij en dat betekent natuurlijk dat het tijd is voor een nieuw cultureel programma.

Op maandag zullen we weer starten met onze bekende welkomstavond. Deze avond zullen wij onze nieuwe studenten verwelkomen en zullen we toasten op weer een nieuwe Sparkweek. Ook degenen die al langer bij Spark verblijven zijn welkom deze avond, zodat zij kennis kunnen maken met de nieuwe studenten.

Op dinsdag zal ¨Discover Spain¨ plaatsvinden, voorheen gingen we er meestal op uit met de Sparkbus om de omgeving te ontdekken, maar deze week staat Salsa op het programma. Ilse zal ons deze middag een workshop geven over deze beroemde Spaanse dans.

Woensdag zal Gloria zich bezighouden met onze traditionele kookles. Zij zal ons deze avond leren om de overheerlijke Spaanse paella te maken.

Donderdag is onze ¨Español en acción¨ activiteit, zoals de naam al zegt, zal er deze middag alleen maar Spaans worden gesproken. Donderdagavond zullen we naar een wijnproeverij gaan, om de beroemde Spaanse sherry´s te proeven. Daarnaast hoef je je vooral geen zorgen te maken over het eten, er zullen namelijk ook heerlijke tapas geserveerd worden deze avond.

When I was 12 years old I started taking dance classes. I started to dance the most common dances in Holland, the latin and ballroom dances. Coming from a real dutch family, I didn’t grow up with dance. The only dance my family had master was the ‘polonaise’ (well known dance in Holland). But from a dancers prospective I can’t really call that a dance. But here in Spain it is a whole different story. People already learn how to dance when they are still a baby. That made me wonder about which dances are the most popular in Spain? There are several dances to choose from, for example flamenco, paso doble and salsa. One is more popular than the other. But the most important thing they all have in common is the passion and emotion the dancers put in to the dance.

Flamenco is really well known in Spain, especially in the south. It is a dance of passion and emotion. At the beginning the flamenco dancers listen to the guitar and other instruments and then slowly start to dance. The dance consist of beautiful arm movements and tapping on the floor.

Paso doble, the dance of the matador and the red cape. The dance is derived from bullfighting. It is really graceful how the women move around the man, but at the same time they are such powerful moves. It is a very beautiful dance with a lot of passion.

And last but not least: salsa. In the south of Spain it is not the most popular dance, but still a lot of people will know how to dance salsa. During the dance the dancers will tell a story with their movements. You really have to feel the music and be one with your dance partner, for you to really experience the feeling of salsa.

‘¡Hola! ¿Qué tal?’ was actually all I knew in Spanish. This is really a pity considering that I have been to a couple of Spanish speaking countries and I listen to a lot of Spanish music. So a Spanish course was a logical step to take. But first let me introduce myself. My name is Ilse, I am from Holland and I am 27 years old. My passion is salsa dancing and that is where it all started.

5 years ago I started with salsa classes and it didn’t take long before I realized I was addicted. Also known as the ‘salsa fever’. I started as a student, but I loved it so much that I joined a demonstration team and even gave class to beginners. Because salsa has his origins in Cuba it is inevitable that you will be introduced with Spanish. You will hear Spanish in the songs and meet a lot of Spanish-speaking people at the salsa parties. Spanish is the language of salsa!

Spanish is a beautiful language and It is even in the top 3 of world languages, it is a shame that I never learned how to speak it. So that is how I ended up at Spark languages! I am participating in the work experience program. I have Spanish class in the morning and work in the afternoon. This is really a great way of finding out what working in an international environment entails and learning how to speak Spanish at the same time.

Through this blog I will keep you updated about my experiences with Spark languages. From the southern town of el Puerto de Santa Maria I would love to take you on this journey. And who knows, maybe I will see you down here.

It’s finally time for next week’s cultural events programme!

Starting with our welcome drinks on Monday, we will be welcoming our new students to Spark with a drink on us and as usual everyone is welcome to join and enjoy. On Tuesday we have our discover Spain activity, lunch and a walk along the beach – sounds like a perfect afternoon!

Wednesday night brings our weekly cooking class and this week it’s ‘Tortilla de patatas’. Yummy! Save me some please!

Finally on Thursday it is one of our favourite Español en Acción activities, Manualidades. Show off your creative side, and of course your Spanish!

Vrijdag 27 september en zaterdag 28 september zullen wij aanwezig zijn bij de Onderwijsbeurs Zuid in Eindhoven. De beurs zal plaatsvinden in het beursgebouw van Eindhoven, Lardinoisstraat 8, naast het Centraal Station. Onze gepassioneerde docenten zullen je hier graag meer vertellen over onze cursussen en het leren van de Spaanse taal. Mis deze kans dus niet en maak persoonlijk kennis met Spark!

It’s the time of the week that everyone has been waiting for, and no it’s not the weekend, it’s the new cultural events programme!

Starting with our welcome drinks on Monday, we will be welcoming our new students to Spark with a drink on us and as usual everyone is welcome to join and enjoy. On Tuesday we have our discover Spain activity, taking place this week in Jerez. Take a tour around the beautiful city of Jerez and then finish the day with a Flamenco show.

On Wednesday Gloria is satisfying everyone’s sweet tooth with her cooking class, teaching the students how to make ‘Roscos de azúcar con chocolate caliente’ – sounds delicious!

On Thursday Mari is getting ready to host the Games night, wine, cheese, games and fun, the only rule is, you have to be having fun in Spanish!

August is nearly over and we can’t believe we are ready with our first September cultural activities, where has the time gone!

Starting with our welcome drinks on Monday, we will be welcoming our new students to Spark with a drink on us and as usual everyone is welcome to join and enjoy.

On Tuesday we have our Discover Spain activity and this week it is one of our most popualr activities; a trip to Sanlucar. Relax on the beach, walk around the town, shop and enjoy tapas and of course a drink on us, all in the beautiful surroundings of Sanlucar.

On Wednesday Gloria is trying something new in the kitchen for our weekly cooking class; Plato alpujareño. It may be a new dish, but as usual it will taste delicious!

And last, but not least, on Thursday we have our Español en Accion event visiting el Castillo, but most importantly everything is in Spanish this evening!

On Wednesday our students will be visiting a local Bodega to enjoy sherry tasting and then tapas to follow – but remember you can eat, drink and be merry but as it’s Español en accion you must do so in español!

Finally, on Thursday Gloria will be cooking up a storm in the kitchen, teaching the students in our weekly cooking class and this week ensaladilla is on the menu!
