“Hispanic vote” was key to Obama´s re-election!

Here at Spark Spanish we have been following the U.S Presidential election with unbridled enthusiasm! We had a particular interest this year because Spanish people have had a direct influence on the result! Fair to say, the election was neck and neck to the final hour. However, Obama believes that the “Hispanic Vote” was of huge importance to his impressive victory. In an election where the candidates target certain states to make sure they receive those specific electoral votes, Obama certainly had the backing of those states with the highest percentage of Hispanic voters.  After the final count, Obama received 303 Electoral votes which outshone Romneys 206.

With a record of 24 million registered Hispanic voters, Obama won over 70% of their vote with significant victories in Nevada, Ohio, Colorado and Florida. Hispanic voters in the 2012 Presidential election were mainly impressed by Obama’s “immigration reform”.

Over half of the immigrants to the U.S since 2010 have been Hispanic and this number is expected to carry on increasing. Looking at current the trend, the U.S is expected to be completely bilingual by 2050. Many people study Spanish in order to further their opportunities in business and the general workplace. Studying Spanish is becoming extremely popular and is becoming a well-sought after skill for employers. There is no better place to study Spanish than in Spain itself- namely right here in authentic El Puerto de Santa Maria!

The world is changing and learning a language can be so useful to you now. Here at Spark Spanish we teach many people with many different abilities, those who are simply looking to improve their existing Spanish to be able to converse more in their favourite holiday destination and also those who are looking to gain a DELE qualification with our intensive course. The DELE diploma is of great international value for those who are going to study at a Spanish speaking University or those wanting to work in a Spanish speaking environment. So, don’t t delay in improving your employment chances and moving with the times. The “Hispanic vote” in the 2012 election has helped Obama in his re- election and to change the lives of others. Come to Spain and learn Spanish right here at Spark and change YOUR life! It will be an experience you won’t forget!

The “Higher Education Ranking” is a website with a ranking of 200 universities that are the most prestigious in the world. In the 2011 ranking, only one Spanish University appeared in this ranking, the University Pompeu Fabra of Barcelona. However, when you look at the top 500 University ranking, 11 Spanish universities are ranked, including University Autónoma of Madrid, University Complutense of Madrid, University Politécnica of Valencia, University of Vigo and University of Zaragoza.

These Spanish Universities are considered very good in the European Academia. When you include the warm climate we always have, and the opportunities that are offered to the students, it is clear that Spain is a very good destination for European students.

If you have decided to study in a Spanish university, whether doing with an Erasmus grant or not, you need to know of the Spanish qualification DELE: Diploma de Español como Lengua Extranjera (Diploma of Spanish as a Foreign Language) which you can prepare for with dedicated classes here at Spark Spanish. There is no better way of receiving this accredited qualification, other than studying in the native country, Spain. Also, if you are planning on studying abroad, with Erasmus, many members of the team here at Spark Spanish have been on an Erasmus themselves and understand the different requirements when studying abroad in Spain or any where else. We at Spark Spanish will give you advice about university life in Spain and help you with all that you need to make the most of  your Spanish Erasmus experience.

Deportes muy interesantes que puedes practicar en Andalucía – Exciting sports you can do in Andalucia

Spain is the world and european champions in football, olympic runners up in basketball and won bronze in the recent world handball championship, but what other sports do they play in Spain?  Below is a list of common sports played in Spain with simple explanations on each one.  Enjoy 🙂

Check out our beginners guide to padel.

Do you prefer padel or tennis?

Today’s Spark Spanish blog post is about the two winds with the most significance because they affect the whole of the Iberian Peninsular. In fact, as the Spark Spanish school is situated in the seaside town of El Puerto de Santa Maria and near Cadiz, we find that the two winds you will read about below create excellent conditions for combining your Spanish course with some watersports such as windsurfing and sailing.

In Spain we have many different types of winds due to the variations in elevation of the land on the peninsular. Some of the different winds are: tramontane (the northern wind across the mountains), ostro (the southerly, warm and humid wind) and libeccio (the westerly, more violent wind).

Poniente.

The Poniente is a very cold and humid wind originating from the West and which we experience throughout the year. This is one of the types of winds brought about by the low pressure areas in the Atlantic ocean, creating a very unstable climate in the western side of the peninsular. However the situation is very different on the Mediterranean coast where the air is much drier. Due to the Fhöen affect, the air heats up and the temperatures rise leading to a drier climate which then provokes and spreads forest fires which cause devastation across the peninsular during Summer. The Poniente is a dangerous wind as it originates over the sea.

Levante.

The Levante originates in the central Mediterranean. It reaches it’s highest speeds across the Strait of Gibraltar. To the east of the Rock of Gibraltar the Levante wind carries snow and rain.

The Levante is more common from May to October and it can reach speeds of up to 120km/hr in the Strait of Gibraltar. When this happens the ships and boats can’t even leave. The Strait of Gibraltar has particular geographical characteristics which make it a natural funnel that resists the wind. This causes the wind speeds to increase which then make the Strait a dangerous place to sail through.

Due to it’s geographical location, Tarifa is the place where the Levante and Poniente winds blow the strongest and this makes it the perfect place to go surfing!

Cantes y bailes típicos en Andalucía – Typical Andalusian song and dance

This is the first in a series of blog posts which aim to help you discover Spanish culture with Spark. Look out for more posts like this every week!

Spark Spanish is based in El Puerto de Santa María which is one of the best places in Andalucía to discover authentic Spanish culture. Many of our students like to see live music and dance shows which run throughout the year in and around El Puerto de Santa María and Cádiz, but not many people know about the different types 0f Andalucían dances that exist.

Read on and see if you know any…

Seguidilla

If you have never been, you should definitely go!

Flamenco

Would you like to learn to dance flamenco?

Saeta

Have you ever been to the Andalusian Holy Week?

Which one of these facts is TRUE?…Cuál de estos hechos es verdad?

We recently posted this question on the Spark Spanish Facebook page to test you on your general knowledge about Spain. Here are some explanations to each possible answer that we gave you:

Bullfighting is Spain’s national sport.

Flamenco is a Spanish dance.

Paella is a seafood dish

Spain is the only place in Europe with wild monkeys.

Tapas is a type of food in Spain.

Sangria is the most popular drink in Spain.
