A hard but rewarding Academic Year 2014/15 comes to end.  It has been a fun year both with our students in our English Academy and amazing adults on our Spanish Adult Courses.  We’ve had many special and funny moments including: Graham and David being men in black, Iris attacking us all with the sparks and Joe’s many many funny faces, not to mention Inge’s all round wackiness that always makes one laugh.  Together we’ve shared many smiles and much laughter.  Throughout we have been a great team and even the harder moments we have got through together.  I know whatever the future holds that we will share nice memories of the last year in Spark and the great students we had the honor of educating.  A big thank you to each and everyone of you for being unique and special and adding you own Spark to our little project:).  Below is the slideshow from 2014/2015 as well some special photos from previous years. 🙂 🙂

2014-15 SLIDESHOW

School groups tour to Spain video

Spark offers customized school group tours to Spain. The school group programmes include (optional) Spanish classes and cultural activities or city trips. The Spanish classes can be completely catered to needs of the students and there are many cultural activities and city trips available to choose from. This video gives information about the school group programmes and what kind of activities Spark organizes. Also it gives information about the different accomodation options for school groups. In this video I followed and filmed the students from Tudor Hall School from England who were staying with Spanish families. I have gone with them to all the activities they have done and visited two of the Spanish families to see how the students´ experiences were. Both families invited me for dinner and it was really nice to see how the students adapted to the Spanish way of life. This video was probably the most fun one to make, because I was actually involved with the school groups myself joining them during the activities and seeing them enjoy their time here in El Puerto!

This slideshow I have made gives a general impression of the experience of doing a Spanish course in Spark Spanish here in the South of Spain. It is a selection of photos of which I think show the atmosphere in Spark and the life here in El Puerto de Santa Maria best. After four months of living here, I am still really enthusiastic about this particular part of Spain. The weather, beaches, the food and the locals, everything really I like here in El Puerto. Also, the people who work in Spark Spanish are doing their very best to make things as comfortable for the students as possible. So, all I can see is come to El Puerto and discover the Spanish life yourself!

Students´ opinions´ about everything

This video is a resume of all the videos I have made before. It gives a short overview of the opinions of the students who have been staying here at Spark: with comments about the Spanish classes, the Sparkville residence, and El Puerto de Santa Maria. Also, this is the first video wherein I am giving my opinion! All by all, I hope the video will give a clear impression of the whole experience of studying Spanish here at Spark Spanish in El Puerto de Santa Maria and that it will motivate you to come and study Spanish as well!

Review of El Puerto de Santa Maria

Students´ opinions about the town in which the Sparkville Residence is located, El Puerto de Santa Maria. El Puerto is an authentic Spanish town where you really can live the Spanish life! There are not a lot of foreign tourists here, so most locals only know Spanish which makes it great for practicing your Spanish. And then you have got the amazing beaches, which rival any in Europe! One of those beaches is located within walking distance of Spark Spanish, but there are also loads of other beaches to discover if you´ll walk a bit further. The nightlife in El Puerto is also great for all ages and again the centre is just 10 mins away. All by all we’re sure you’ll feel that El Puerto is a great place to learn or improve your Spanish!

Sparkville Review: my second student video

I have been having a lot of fun making the second review video which is about the Sparkville Spanish Student residence. Whilst doing my Spark Spanish work experience program and doing the Spanish course, I have been living in Sparkville myself which is located on the floor above the classrooms. Living here has always been fun and relaxed, we feel at home! In the communal area there are always people who you could talk to or hang around with, but you can also relax in your own room and be by yourself if you want to. There are students coming from all over the world and we always love to encourage each other to speak Spanish. My favourite place is definitely the roof-terrace, perfect for sunbathing. Also, the beach is only a 10 minute walk away and the centre is closeby too! All by all, for me it couldn’t have been better than this!

Spanish Course Review: my first student video

I am so excited to share the first review video I´ve made while doing the Spanish work-experience here at Spark in El Puerto de Santa Maria in the south of Spain! Never thought that filming, and especially the editing part would be so time consuming, but the experience was great. I just bought a new camera to capture my experiences in Spain and by doing the work experience I immediately had a good reason to use it. Before doing this project I didn´t have any experience with filming or editing, so I am happy to say I have learned a lot besides studying Spanish in Spain. Of course, all of this wouldn´t be possible without all the amazing students I could film, muchas gracias a todos!

‘¡Hola! ¿Qué tal?’ was actually all I knew in Spanish. This is really a pity considering that I have been to a couple of Spanish speaking countries and I listen to a lot of Spanish music. So a Spanish course was a logical step to take. But first let me introduce myself. My name is Ilse, I am from Holland and I am 27 years old. My passion is salsa dancing and that is where it all started.

5 years ago I started with salsa classes and it didn’t take long before I realized I was addicted. Also known as the ‘salsa fever’. I started as a student, but I loved it so much that I joined a demonstration team and even gave class to beginners. Because salsa has his origins in Cuba it is inevitable that you will be introduced with Spanish. You will hear Spanish in the songs and meet a lot of Spanish-speaking people at the salsa parties. Spanish is the language of salsa!

Spanish is a beautiful language and It is even in the top 3 of world languages, it is a shame that I never learned how to speak it. So that is how I ended up at Spark languages! I am participating in the work experience program. I have Spanish class in the morning and work in the afternoon. This is really a great way of finding out what working in an international environment entails and learning how to speak Spanish at the same time.

Through this blog I will keep you updated about my experiences with Spark languages. From the southern town of el Puerto de Santa Maria I would love to take you on this journey. And who knows, maybe I will see you down here.

My “Spark Spanish” Experience!

I have just completed the first day of my General Spanish course at Spark and wanted to share my experience with the world! At first I was slightly apprehensive, but I am now positive that I made the right choice to come to over Spain to learn a new language.

I arrived at Spark as a complete beginner, attempting to find my way from the airport with “Hola” and “¿Dónde…está…Spark?”, using a lot of hand gestures and of course my trusty “Spanish for beginners” pocket book to find my way to “Sparkville”. I decided not to take Spark´s “Free pick-up service” in order to challenge myself and see if I can really get by and guess what. I can! Anyone can! So here I was, I had made it El Puerto de Santa Maria just fine! On the night, all of the students staying in the residence went for “welcome drinks” organized by the staff -we even got a free drink at the bar on arrival! “When in Rome” seemed to be the theme of the night; we ate plenty of “tapas”, drank a few “Sherry´s” and practiced our basic Spanish…. “la cuenta por favor!” (The bill please!) I really couldn´t wait for the Spanish lessons to begin!

This morning soon came around and thanks to the welcome drinks last night, I already felt very at home and well acquainted with the other students here. We had a presentation from Inge (Director of Studies) at 9.15. She went over the weekly timetable and told us what the social and cultural activities were for this week. They all sounded great! I was particularly looking forward to the “Sherry tasting” night on Wednesday. They call the Wednesday event: “Español en Acción” (Complete Spanish) because you can only speak Spanish during the event! Sounds like fun!

After the presentation I went off to my classroom to meet my new teacher – Luciá. It definitely felt strange to be a student again after many years- I certainly had a case of “first day blues”. Luciá was very patient which helped to calm my nerves and would often respond enthusiastically with “Muy bien Gertjan!” At the break I discovered that we had students from all over the world, staying for 2 or 3 weeks…and often much longer! I spoke to one girl who was studying as an Au-pair and is staying with a Spanish family for a whole year. She said really enjoys living with the family and explained how it has really enhanced her learning experience!

The afternoon was even better, we got to practice some of the vocabulary we learnt before the break and use it in conversation group activities. It was amazing what I could remember! The hours soon flew past and it was 2 o´clock before I could say “Hasta mañana!” After a few hours, seeing the “Plaza de Toros” and some of the local amenities I went back to “Sparkville” with the rest of the students. This was our meeting point for the cultural activity and we congregated in the reception, ready for the off! We were put in to two teams by Lucia, Anish and Charlotte who led the Cultural activity. We had to ask locals for the answers to certain questions about El Puerto de Santa Maria. Each question took us to a new location and the team who finished back at Spark was the winner. It was a very fun activity and a great way of forcing ourselves to speak the language. Speak Spanish, or lose the game! It was very close and we definitely struggled with certain questions, but we made it back first to Spark. Success! Olé! A great end to a great day.

I had loved my first jam packed, yet fun filled day in Spain! I hope that every day is as exciting as this and I am enthusiastic about all of the new challenges which lie ahead of me. My first day? Perfecto!

Hasta Luego,

Gertjan
