ALEX BRYLL: MISSION STATEMENT on my work and study programme in Spain

During my 5 weeks of work and study experience, I will develop awareness of what it means to be an employee. I will learn how to make the most of my internship whether I’m working solo or with a team. Knowledge and skills that I will acquire while being a part of the Spark team will bring me benefits later on in my life and I will be proud of the process I went through to achieve my goals.

In terms of learning Spanish, I will be doing my best to communicate with clients and co-workers in this language and I will learn as much as possible each and every day. I want to be viewed as a hardworking but easy-going person, with who everyone could have a chat and be friends, but at the same time, responsible and willing to change and improve. My native Spanish speaker – Elena will see my progress in learning the language, in terms of confidence and fluency. Also, I will leave an impression on my fellow students as a quick learner, always prepared and on time.

I will contribute positively to the community of Spark by being committed and productive to my office work. I will become a better individual by supporting my team and learning from their experiences, because everyone has a story to tell. This is a great opportunity to meet new people and practice networking skills while establishing a network of professional contacts and mentors. It will be a chance to practice communication/teamwork skills and provide evidence that I am initiative, reliable and have a sense of responsibility. I will apply some of the ideas learned in school and provide a bridge between school and the professional world.

At the end, I will notice that I have grown as a person and developed good work habits. I will be proud of my language and work skills because I will know that everything that I have accomplished is the result of my hard work and ambitions.

In my 3 week work and study programme at Spark I will learn what goes into being a successful and hardworking intern. This knowledge will be the base of my future work and life experiences. In this time I will be confronted with new things every day, that’s why miss communications and language barriers will be part of this experience. But I´m not afraid of facing everything that awaits me in the future. I will learn from every experience provided and grow as an individual.

During my stay I will break from my comfort zone. I will do things I´ve never done before or that I was afraid of doing. This will open more opportunities in the future and make me more open to the world. A big part of this is also becoming a valuable park of the Spark team. I will be viewed by the staff as a reliable and diligent part of the team. By reflecting on my own progress and objectives I will rise up to this role.

A big part of my stay is also studying Spanish. In my visit I will speak as much as possible. One hand this will help me to improve my language but on the other it will also help me to open up to others and understand their skill and knowledge. By opening up we can all benefit as a whole.

Looking back at my work and study experience I will be proud of all the things I´ve accomplished as the result of my dedicated work in Spark.

By the end of my 18 weeks work and study programme, I will have achieved all my goals. Since this is my first real job, I will have much more experience after this. I will always listen and learn from my fellow staff and my manager. If I will teach, I will learn from the insights and knowledge of my students. I want my fellow staff to think of me as an enthusiastic, helpful and reliable colleague. My manager, Douglas Haines, will see me as a hard working and independent intern. I want both my manager and my fellow staff to say that I have inspired them and that by sharing each others experiences and knowledge we have achieved great things together.

My HU supervisor, Bregje Snel, will be able to see my progress due to our weekly contact and by my final report. She will see that I am more confident in working and will keep being confident when I am back at my University.  To acknowledge this progress, I will obtain a grade for my final report between a 7 and a 10.

After 18 weeks I will look back at my internship with a proud feeling. I will see progress in my communication/interpersonal skills, teaching skills and management skills. I will be more confident in doing assignments and I will not be afraid of failing and being creative. I will have my slightly narrow perspective changed to thinking out of the box. I will continuously challenge myself to face my insecurities, to help me be more confident and see progress in my personal development. Overall, Spark Languages will have given me more insight and experience to the business world and have helped me develop my personal skills.

To achieve all these things, I will work hard and always give 200 percent. I will take notes in meetings with my supervisor and manager, and I will reflect on these meetings every week to keep on improving. With making every day goals I plan to achieve development.  My focus will be on my personal and educational development. To do this I will have a positive attitude and I will be highly motivated to not only develop my own skills, but also to inspire and help develop people around me.

This is my statement of intent that i have written at the start of my work experience programme in order to set myself a set of professional and personal goals during my time here.

Statement of Intent

During my 5 week work and study programme at Spark I will establish and commit to good working habits that I will be able to use and build on throughout the rest of my working life. I will face the inevitable challenges of working in a completely new environment with a positive attitude and persistence. I will learn from my own mistakes and the experiences and methods of others in order to fulfil the tasks set for me by Spark and to be successful in my own objectives both with larger, long-term projects and smaller tasks.

I will apply myself fully in order to become a useful and capable part of the Spark team. I will be viewed by the other staff at Spark as a dependable and hard-working colleague because I will be dedicated to my role here and will consistently show improvement. I will improve and grow by reflecting on my goals and constantly striving to understand what will help me achieve them to the fullest.

I will be a positive force around Spark, taking each new task in my stride, aiming for both efficiency and thoroughness in my work. I will work with the team both by learning from their advice and experiences and in turn by valuing and appreciating their work and supporting them in all that they do here.Furthermore I intend to use my time here to improve my Spanish, I am committed to this goal and will work hard in and out of the classroom to progress.

By the end of my time here I will be proud and confident of all that I have achieved and learned because I will know that what I have accomplished is the result of my dedication both to my work experience goals and to my Spanish studies.

MARY-JANE WALSH: MISSION STATEMENT

I am adamant that by the time my six month placement is finished here in Spark, I will aim very high every goal and task possible set to me by the Spark team and set by myself. Originally, my goal was to improve my Spanish and get a glimpse into teaching, I have also been given more responsibilities which I will take in my stride. I will give it my best to fulfil any objectives and aims presented by the Spark team. I will learn as much as possible and every day the Spark team will see improvement in me, no matter how big or small. I will always try my best to speak and improve my Spanish to communicate better with clients and staff members. As my first job relating to office work, I will try and learn many skills of office work and I will utilise them daily and efficiently by constant focus. In these six months, I will not only improve my language skills, (which is something I unfortunately lack at the moment), I will try learn how to work more efficiently and how to give my complete focus to a task, constantly producing results as a result of my hard work. It is unquestionable to say that challenges and obstacles will be met along the way, but I will try not to be too fazed by this and take it in my stride.

When I am fully immersed in the way in which an office works, I will be viewed by my colleges as a hard worker, the reason why I will be viewed as a hard worker is by my steady improvement, my dedication, passion and by my ability to complete tasks efficiently and to a high standard. Even though I am young (and still have a lot to learn), and to also take into consideration that I have no prior experience in office work, I want to be a reliable employee of this company, someone who is there to help when things are chaotic for other staff members and someone who people can turn to if help is required. By my managers, I aspire to be viewed as someone who was a great worker, always gave all her passion and dedication to Spark related objectives. I will be viewed as someone who was constantly improving, someone who was a valuable staff member and could produce results daily no matter how big or small.

Even though my experience in teaching English is extremely lacking, I will try my best to be a teacher that creates a comfortable, open and inspiring classroom to learn in. My students will consider me to be dedicated, caring and prepared while being able to produce fun, diverse classes at the same time.

To achieve all of these goals, I will set aside 10/15 minutes at the end of every work day to reflect on the days objectives, set goals for the following day and reflect on how I could improve, I will ask questions if necessary, and always learn from advice given by taking notes or putting into practise. I will be a friendly, helpful and positive source around Spark. By putting all these habits into practise, I will then improve my work ethic, attention to detail and client attention. Good habits make for a good future and mine have started in my first week of placement.

POPPY MILLAR: MISSION STATEMENT

I am a firm believer that I will achieve every personal and professional goal set by the Spark team and myself. Despite committing to a placement in order to improve my language skills, I also value the position I have been given. I will fulfil the objectives and visions of the company whilst supporting the team with anything, and everything, required. This is my first proper job role within an office-based environment and I will learn as much as I will perform, exemplifying the skills learnt and utilise them in all working scenarios. I should be good at my role but in actual fact, I will be great at my role, always producing results no matter how menial the objectives may seem, because Inge obviously saw potential in me and I will prove this to her by the end of my placement.

Six months is plenty of time to grow within a workplace, and I will slowly, yet efficiently, present this after I have adjusted to the hardworking and active atmosphere of Spark. Working in a lively office, full of dedicated people, will make me value all the work that others do, and this will reflect through my own work ethic and progress. I will develop and finesse my capability to work effectively and efficiently, whilst taking in everything Spark has to offer me. Moreover I will become a professional and driven individual as a result of taking the Spark values on board and transforming my own work to be the best it can be, if not more.

During my period at Spark, I will be relied upon as an important team member, available to help or advise, if possible, and always seek to put my best foot forwards. My colleagues will recognize me as bright and enthusiastic within the office, keen to learn more. The native Spanish speakers will see key language progression, in terms of confidence and fluency, adding to the support I will give them over the course of my placement. Not only will I put in the effort to speak Spanish but also be recognized by my colleagues as a valuable team member shown through my dedication and quick learning at Spark. From the perspective of my managers, I will be someone who is considered more than just a temporary placement member. In actual fact, my managers will be impressed with the work I do, and recognize the initiative taken in all objectives that are set.

In terms of teaching English, I will strive to produce fun and informative classes so when I leave in December, the new teacher will have a competent and fast-learning class. I will leave an impression on my students as a caring and reliable teacher, always prepared and never letting them down whilst also acting silly. I will always ask for help when needed but also act upon my initiative to come up with new ideas to produce a positive and effective classroom setting.

To achieve everything, I will dedicate my time productively within a schedule that creates results, not stress. I will take on board everything I am taught by my managers, colleagues and students in all aspects of the job- be it a specific task, change of attitude or challenge that I am faced with, and produce quality work. In the beginning I will be prepared to meet failure, however by the end I will overcome it.

FINAL THOUGHTS..

I am in my final month of my placement here at Spark and reading back on my mission statement, I can see that I have achieved what I originally promised myself I would achieve whilst at Spark. It has been an interesting six months but I have learnt so much about how a small business operates and now understand the true value of being accountable for your work and the work of others. To always strive to do your best, knowing that there will be bad days but continue to grow and improve. I would recommend this position to anyone who is looking to develop within the workplace because you receive the same amount of support and professional development as you give with your hard work, time and dedication to Spark. It isn’t an easy job and be prepared for unforeseen challenges but take them in your stride and you will look back at your time here with fondness and a new set of transferable skills.

What’s more is that my Spanish languages skills have improved massively. This is down to making the effort to speak Spanish whenever possible and also engaging with the Spanish side of Spark. I did two week’s worth of lessons, courtesy of Spark and also find myself speaking and writing Spanish a lot daily. Looking back on my first couple of weeks, I was so nervous answering the phone, worried that I wouldn’t be able to understand or articulate myself both grammatically nor professionally. Whereas now, I have no problem and there are days when I still don’t know what is being said but I feel confident to handle those situations. I definitely feel living in Andalusia is the best way to learn Spanish because once you understand Andaluz, Spanish is a breeze (sort of).

There are five things that I will take away from my Sparky experience:

1) Short term goals lead to long term success. Being organised now ultimately makes the difference to the end result.

2) Never see anything as a task, always an objective. This positive way of thinking really helps when you feel you aren’t achieving as much as you should be.

3) Never see anything as unimportant. This links to no.2 in the sense that you may not think an ‘objective’ is important in the moment but the overall outcome is affected by your attitude and motivation.

4) Take iniative. From Day 1, I was told to resolve issues myself. Yes, everyone is allowed to ask for help but only ask once you have exhausted all other forms of tackling the situation. There is no such word as can´t in the business world.

5) Don’t be someone that has to rely on others to get the job done. Be reliable and support your team by completing your daily/weekly/monthly goals. This is the key to operating a successful small business.

Poppy Millar is a languages undergraduate from the University of Bath and did our Spark Secretary Internship. Spark offers many types of work experience, check out our different work and study programmes here!

By the end of my work and study programme here in Spain at Spark Spanish, I want to be proud of my achievements and the things that I have learned. I will take this opportunity and make the best I possibly can out of it and I will value my experiences and skills that I will get over the next three weeks. In addition to learning Spanish, I will receive a first impression of a office environment, which will definitely be helpful in future jobs. Throughout my time in Spain, I will strive to fulfill the 10 values of Spark and they will inspire my future way of thinking in my daily life.

During my work and study period at Spark, I will come across as a very motivated and helpful person, a team player, that is always ready to learn more and not afraid to ask for help. I hope that I can also inspire my fellow students and staff members and that I will be an enrichment for Spark. But above all, my aim is to learn from my colleagues and classmates and gain more of their knowledge and excitement for what they do. For my manager, Douglas, I will be a very reliable person that completes my work on time and gives the best to achieve the tasks as well as possible. By the end of October, he will be able to say that my knowledge and skills have improved and I will have become a more independent and mature person.

In addition I want to become a good friend to my classmates. I will always act respectfully and do my best to be thought of as a kind and helpful person. As I will inspire others. I aim to make them look at me and say because of you, I did it! I look forward to having a great time with them and exchanging experiences, stories and cultures.

I know that I am responsible for my own destiny. All my actions have consequences and I have the power to decide weather they will turn out good or bad. I will be able to master this responsibility and work hard so that I can push myself to my limit and overcome it. In the end of my Internship, I will be proud of myself, of what I have accomplished and learned over the three weeks, so that I can show what i learned when I am back in Germany. I will focus on my motivation for learning Spanish and gather as much experience of work as possible and of the Spanish culture.

Work and Study in Spain: Mission Statement

On work experience programme at SparkSpanish, one of the first things every student on work and study programme does is write up a statement of professional and personal targets and objectives they wish to achieve during their time on the programme. Below is my mission statement listing the things I will achieve during my time studying and working in Spain.

Finlay Worrallo

Statement of Intent

I want to feel proud of myself when I return to England at the end of September, and to feel like I did the best job I could. As well as learning Spanish, I’m here at Spark to gain valuable experience working in an office environment and doing something I love writing in a professional capacity. I’m never going to have this exact same opportunity again, and to make the most of it I need to push myself to work as hard as I can. I want to arrive home as a more mature person.

I have an irrational fear of failure which I am going to work hard to combat, as without failing there’s no chance of learning. I’m also going to be aware of how I come across to people and focus on being polite, engaging and fun to work with. I want to be an inspirational and valuable member of the team, without deliberately drawing attention to myself. I will not let anyone down or disappoint anyone and I will not expect other people to look after me. I will aim to be more competent and mature than the average seventeen year old through my commitment and my understanding of the work.

As well as my fellow workers, I want to get on well with my fellow students and do my part in improving their time at Spark. I’ll look out for them and keep my eyes open for any problems of theirs which I can help with, whether they be language problems or personal problems. I want to fight against my natural instinct to stay in the shallow end and avoid risks, and try new things with the potential of failure. I’ll work hard to have a good attitude to my work and do it with energy and passion, even when this requires a lot of effort. If I think I genuinely need help with a task, I will ask for assistance, but I will always do my best to solve my own problems without asking for help.

I will not make excuses for myself. I will take full responsibility for what I do, even when this is hard. I will aim to learn from, and respect, more experienced team members. As I can imagine writing in a paid capacity in the future, I want to learn from others who have already gained what I want to gain, and listen to every piece of advice they give.

I want to be honest in what I say and do, but I also want to avoid being unnecessarily personal and burdening others with my feelings. I will take full responsibility for my own feelings and retain a professional attitude in everything I say and do.

Most of all, I’ll aim to give more and put in more energy than I think I can. I will learn to push myself to the limit with my work and give to others more than they give to me.

Finlay Worrallo

During my time on my work experience I will be doing blogging for our spanishschooltours website. My aim is to write up 5 great blog posts a week, so start getting excited to read them!

 Mission statement – Maebel Bakker

By the end of my internship at SparkSpanish, my HU International supervisor, Bregje Snel will be able to say that I succeeded in all parts of the requirements of this internship. She will be able to confirm that I gained more business experience in an international environment and due to this my knowledge collected at HU is extended. To do so I will keep Bregje Snel up-to-date weekly by email and through Skype meetings. Besides that she can see that this period made me grow in both business and personal aspects. To meet all the requirements stated by HU I will prove that I’ve done analytical work and used this during further projects, besides that my languages levels of both English and Spanish will be improved. These points will be stated in the final appraisal from Bregje Snel by the end of the internship. To measure this in concrete numbers I want to achieve a final grade for my internship that’s between 7 and 10.

During my period at Spark I will be recognized as a highly motivated and dedicated team player, a person who’s easy to work with and has a willingness to help whenever it’s needed. I hope I can inspire and learn my colleagues during my internship but mostly learn from them and gain knowledge about their business experience and passion. My colleagues will look back on me as a professional intern who is highly motivated to learn and also fun to work with.

My managers will be both content with the work that I do during the internship as well as with the personal growth I went through. They will see me as a reliable and motivated intern who was valuable for the team. They can both confirm that I delivered valuable work and knowledge to Spark and combined this correctly with my assessments for school. Besides that they will endorse the fact that I came to Spark for business experience and cultural knowledge rather than having 10 weeks of fun in Spain.

My period at Spark will provide me with lots of new knowledge which will be both business and personal related. I will extend my experience in the work field and gain more cultural/ethical knowledge in general. Besides that I will develop more communication skills and will learn about managerial and marketing aspects. This period will bring me lots of personal development as well, such as growth in independence, growth in confidence etc. This all will be a valuable addition to both my HU degree and personal development. Besides that this will help me in my further career and hopefully be seen as an additional experience.

To achieve all these things I will use an open-minded view as much as possible, I will focus on my learning progress and developments throughout the whole period. This will require a highly motivated & can-do attitude, I will generate this attitude by keeping the end goals in mind and staying positive!
